Date Night

Tamara strode casually along 161st street in the Bronx around mid-day with Damien keeping pace to her left. She had her hand in his, fingers locked in a tight embrace. She chuckled to herself upon seeing his facial expression. Damien’s face was a cross between seeing a shocking or unfortunate occurrence and smelling something rancid. His lips were twisted in a tight scowl, his eyes were narrowed, his nose flared. As other men walked alongside Tamara he casually pulled her close to him, changing their embrace from handholding to a gentle shoulder lock. Tamara glanced at the guys as they walked by. They looked at the couple strangely. Some even laughed but otherwise they kept walking along the sidewalk minding their business. Once they were out of earshot Tamara glanced sourly at Damien.

"I think they were laughing at us."

Damien shrugged his shoulders.

"So? As long as they don't brush against you then I don't care about those idiots."

“Then what’s with that look on your face? You’ve had it since we got off the train.”

Damien’s expression faltered momentarily but soon regained its original look of exasperation.

“I don’t know how I let you talk me into this.” He dusted the lines of his jacket but nothing was there. “I feel dirty after riding in that filthy box car.”

“It wasn’t that dirty and I’m glad you came with me on the train. Have you ever rode on public transportation?”

“Hell no,” Damien was emphatic. “If I don’t drive then I take a cab. That’s what they’re there for. How you can get close to those people in such a cramped space is ridiculous.”

“Those people are the same as me. We’re just trying to get to where we need to be. Some of us can’t afford our own cars or even cab fare. Paying a few dollars for a pass that lets you ride all day long is a blessing.”

“A curse is more like it. People can’t afford a car to get them around but I bet you’ll see new flat screen televisions in their houses, their hair fried, dyed and to the side and Jordan’s so hot on their feet the rubber damn near melts to the ground. It’s all about priorities.”

“Priorities?” Tamara continued the conversation. “I admit that some people have fucked up priorities. They’d rather pay a stylist over paying a bill but that has nothing to do with getting a car.”

“It has everything to do with that. Cars are not that expensive.” Damien glanced at Tamara and saw her “the fuck you talking about” look on her face so he clarified his point. “What I mean is, you can get a car anywhere for any price. There is always someone, somewhere, willing to sell you a car for cheap. My first car cost me three hundred bones. It wasn’t flashy but it got me a way to get around.”

“And how much did you have to pay to put in repairs because if anyone is selling a car for that much money something is wrong with it.
